How To: The Best No-Heat Curls And Waves For Summer Hair

The last thing you wanna do on a hot day is reach for your curling iron or blow dryer. Here are the easiest no-heat tutorials for beachy waves, bouncy curls, and gorgeous volume to get that perfect summer hair.

Overnight Braids

One of the oldest tricks for getting curly hair with great volume is overnight braids! I love this option because it doesn’t require using any tools. Braids are super comfortable to sleep in or you can wear the braided style to work or school, then take your braids down for a night out.

Prep Time: 10-20 minutes (depending on hair length & volume)

Materials Needed:

  • Spray Bottle
  • Hair Ties
  • Spray Leave-In Conditioner

Step 1

Start with damp hair – if your hair is dry, spritz your hair with water until slightly damp. For added hold and protection, add a leave-in conditioner (I like this one by Shea Moisture, that was included in the May Bless Box)!

Step 2

Section your hair into two parts, like you’re making pigtails. For beachy waves, start the braids just below your ears or create two French braids starting at your temples. Secure the braids with hair ties, and sleep overnight! If you like, you can even secure the braids into a crown on the top of your head with a couple bobby pins.

Step 3

In the morning, remove the hair ties. Loosen the braids, and gently comb through with your fingers. Add another spritz of leave-in conditioning spray, and you’re good to go!

Flexi-Rod Curls

Flexirods are long foam tubes with a wire down the middle. Flexi Rods are super easy to use on wet or dry hair, and provide a multitude of results depending on the size of the flexirod, how damp your hair is, and how long you leave them in! Smaller flexirods will create tighter curls, and larger flexirods will create looser, bigger curls. I like this set of 42 flexirods from Amazon, so you can create any style you want! Let’s get started.

Prep Time: 20-40 minutes (depending on hair length & volume)

Materials Needed:

  • Spray Bottle
  • Flexi-Rod Set
  • Spray Leave-In Conditioner
  • Finishing Spray

Step 1

As with any overnight curl or wave, you’ll get the best hold and results if you start with damp hair. After detangling hair, and spritzing with water and leave-in conditioner, section your hair. Depending on how thick your hair is, you’ll need anywhere from 6-8 sections.

Step 2

Divide each section into 3-4 smaller sections – these are the pieces you’ll wrap around each flexirod to create your curls! To wrap your hair, start at the bottom of the section and place the flexirod on top of the section of hair, leaving some blank space on either side of the rod. Roll your hair up toward your scalp. When you get to your scalp, secure the flexirod by twisting the two ends together to make a pretzel. Repeat for each section, all over your head.

Step 3

All done rolling? Make sure each flexirod is secured, and wrap your hair in a silk scarf or bonnet. For the best results, sleep overnight.

Step 4

In the morning or after your curls are completely dry, start taking down the flexirods starting at the nape of your neck. Unwrap the flexirods and gently unroll each section. Shake your hair and gently loosen the curls with your fingers. Finish off with a spritz of hairspray, I like the Volume In Powder spray by Kerastase (which we got in the Something is Blooming Spring Bonus Box)!

No-Heat Beachy Waves

Not looking for full-on curls? Create sexy, beachy boho waves with these no-heat waves.Prep Time: 10-15 minutes (depending on hair length & volume)

Materials Needed:

  • Spray Bottle
  • Finishing Spray
  • Bobby Pins

Step 1

Part your slightly damp, detangled hair into two sections, like you’re putting your hair in pigtails. Take one section, and twist your hair outward (starting just below your ears, down to the ends of your hair).

Step 2

Once your hair is twisted, take the twisted section and pin it on the top of your head, like a crown. Do the same on the other side, twisting the hair in the same direction, and secure with bobby pins.

Step 3

Let your hair dry naturally (ideally overnight). When hair is dry, unpin the ends. Shake your hair out, and voila! Finish off with a light hairspray.
