How To: Add Sun Protection Into Your Daily Routine

We all know sunscreen is basically the most important thing you can do for your skin, but sometimes the thought of adding yet another step to our already-hectic morning routines seems downright impossible. The solution? Incorporate products into your routine that do double duty! Here are Bless Blog’s picks for the best skincare, haircare and body products that will keep you safe from the sun!

How To SunScreen

Double Duty

To cut down on an extra step, look for moisturizers that already contain SPF 30 or above. My top picks are the Blue Lotus Essential Daily Moisturizer SPF 30 ($45 – we featured a deluxe sample in the Spring Bonus Box!) or the Kiehl’s Ultra Facial Moisturizer SPF 30 ($21). Both moisturizers are light enough to feel non-greasy and weightless in the summer heat and humidity and don’t give skin a white sunscreen cast so you can wear it under makeup. Finish with a BB or CC cream with SPF – I like the 1000 Roses CC Color + Correct Sheer Nude SPF 30 by Andalou Naturals ($19.95) and the Dr. Jart Dis-A-Pore Beauty Balm with SPF 30 ($36).

SPF + Beauty

Did you know a lot of foundations and other makeup products now feature SPF protection? Brands from Milk Makeup and Marc Jacobs Beauty to Bobbi Brown and Giorgio Armani Beauty contain SPF protection without sacrificing coverage, texture or color. If you already have a go-to foundation you love, try a setting spray with SPF like the Supergoop! X Milly Defense Refresh Setting Mist Broad Spectrum SPF 50 ($28).

Don’t Forget Your Hands & Lips!

Your hands are one of the first parts of your body to show sun aging, because they’re pretty much always exposed. The next time you’re driving your car, think about how many hours of exposure your hands have gotten just from being on the steering wheel (especially if you live in a traffic-heavy city like LA!) I keep a hand cream with SPF in my glovebox and in my purse, so I can re-apply on the go – I like the Supergoop! Forever Young Hand Cream with Sea Buckthorn Broad Spectrum Sunscreen SPF 40 PA++ ($12-38) and the Rich Girl – Broad Spectrum SPF 25 Hand Cream by Deborah Lippmann ($28).

The skin on our lips is so sensitive! Think of how easily you can get chapped lips on a dry day. Because the skin on our lips is so thin, it’s also extra susceptible to sun damage! When thinking of sun protection, don’t forget your lips! There are many balms and even lipsticks that contain SPF – some of my fave balms are the Fresh Sugar Lip Treatment SPF 15 ($24), which is a balm with gorgeous, soft color, or the Coola Liplux SPF 30 ($12) for a straightforward, colorless balm.

My picks for lipsticks with gorgeous, rich color payout plus SPF protection is the No Lipstick Lipstick SPF 15 by Perricone MD ($30) and the superluxe Rouge Pur Couture Lip Lipstick Collection by Yves Saint Laurent ($37) in Orange Imagine 201 Matte and 70 Le Nu.

SPF + Hair Care

While many finishing sprays, leave-in conditioners and styling mists contain heat protection, another key element you should be incorporating in your hair care routine is UV protection! Just as the sun affects our skin, it can lighten our hair, wash out our expensive salon color, and burn the sensitive skin on our scalps! My go-to summer hair protectant is the Sun Protection Protective Oil with Ylang-Ylang Wax by Khlorane ($18), which protects against the damaging effects of UV rays, salt, sand and chlorine with water-resistant UVA/UVB filters.

For a finishing mist with exceptional hold and UV protection, I always reach for the Restore Instant Protection Spray from Living Proof ($27), and for a nourishing leave-in with UV protection I switch off between Hairdresser’s Invisible Oil Heat & UV Protective Primer by Bumble & Bumble ($28) and the Sugarcane Extract & Meadowfoam Seed Silicone Free Miracle Styler Leave-In Treatment ($16.69, featured in May’s Bless Box)!

SPF protection is SO important all year round (even on those cloudy days where you think the sun is hiding!) Every time I pick up a new product, I look for UV protection whether its a body moisturizer, a setting spray, a leave-in conditioner or a lipstick.
