You paid for it – either in cash at the salon or in sore triceps at home! – so you might as well get your money’s worth! Here’s how to make your blowout last five full days.
Day 1: Blowout Day
You just got your blowout and dang, you look good! Enjoy that shampoo-commercial-worth bounce and shine, and don’t add any extra products. Oh, and try to touch your hair as little as possible! At night, don’t ruin your ‘do by smashing it on a pillow for eight hours. Use a satin or silk scrunchie to gently pull your hair into a low pony or two buns (a la Princess Leia) before hitting the satin or silk pillowcase. In the morning, be sure to use a shower cap lined with terry cloth – the terry cloth will absorb steam from the shower which protects your blowout from frizz.
Day 2: Boost Volume
Don’t reach for the dry shampoo just yet! Chances are, your hair is still clean enough and doesn’t really need it. Also, dry shampoo tends to give hair a matte texture, which means you’ll loose that healthy lustrous shine you had just 24 hours ago. Instead, use a light-to-medium hold hair spray (like the Kerastase Laque Couture Hair Spray from the January 2017 Bless Box) and spray a paddle brush. Flip your head upside down and brush your roots. This will bring back the volume without a heavy dry-shampoo residue.
Day 3: Refresh Your Roots
Your roots are officially oily, but wait – don’t reach for the dry shampoo! Instead, grab a can of texturizing spray – I like the Kerastase Volume In Powder Texturizing Spray (featured in the Something Is Blooming Spring Bonus Box). Texturizing spray is basically a hybrid of hairspray and dry shampoo, giving your hair a boost of volume and structure while absorbing oil and odor. To refresh your roots, flip your head upside down and spritz hair from roots to ends a few times, tousling through with your fingers.
Day 4: Time For A Major Retouch
By day 4, you’re rocking full on bed-head (and not in the sexy Brigitte Bardot way). I know you’re itching to grab that dry shampoo, and today’s finally the day. Hooray! But before you spray away, spritz your hair with water first. Trust me – this will give your hair some body without the extra weight, crunchiness or product buildup. Rough dry your hair (or let it air dry as you’re doing your makeup), then tousle a few spritzes of dry shampoo through your roots. My pick is the Amika Perk Up Dry Shampoo (featured in the July 2017 Bless Box). To smooth out any kinks, run a flatiron or a straightening brush through your hair very quickly – just a single pass should do it.
Day 5: Embrace Your Dirty Hair!
There’s no way around it – your hair is dirty. Just go with it! Spritz on a generous amount of salt spray to amp up the piecey separation. (Added bonus: salt spray breaks down oil and product residue in the hair, making tomorrow’s deep cleansing shampoo that much easier). Can’t deal with the dirty hair? Throw your hair up in a bun, or try a cute braid.
Day 6: Wash Day
You made it five days! Reward yourself with squeaky-clean tresses courtesy of a super clarifying shampoo. Don’t forget a deep conditioning hair mask (like the Art Naturals Whipped Argan Oil Mark Mask featured in the May 2018 Bless Box). Blow out your hair and return to step one!
